Sally James was the first of my pseudonyms, and one still used for my early Regencies published by Regency Reads (Belgrave House).
All my novels are now published both as ebooks and in paperback, under my real name, apart from the Sally James titles.
Why do authors have pseudonyms? In my case it was because, after writing novels set mainly in the seventeenth century, I began to write Regencies as well. Then I wrote contemporaries as Bridget Thorn, and when I was commissioned to write a novel for a different publisher, I had to have yet another, Donna Hunt. Then I wrote another for an American publisher as Vesta Hathaway.
Other writers may feel their real name is difficult in some way, or is already the name of a famous author. So how do we select a pseudonym? I chose Sally James because these were my parents' names. Many authors use a maiden or family name. Bridget Thorn came from my confirmation name, and because we lived in an area called Thornhill. Donna Hunt was a twist on Huntingdon, the street where we then lived. When I wrote a short novella for an American publisher, I chose Vesta Hathaway, my great-grandmother's name, thinking the Shakespeare connection might appeal to Americans.
